Mary Manning Walsh Home (MMWH) under the encouragement and support of it's administrator Sister Sean William O'Brien has been very active in the CMS NHQI 7th and 8th Scopes of Work. The facility regularly uses IPRO generated materials, suggested guidelines, and recommendations, and participates in IPROs NHQI collaborative openly sharing materials developed with others. The facility has shown improvement in the clinical quality measures (Q204-Q406) as follows:

Chronic Pain (53% improvement)

Physical Restraints (81% improvement)

Depression/Mood Worsening (58% improvement)

Barbara Quattlebaum, Director of Special Projects, attributes the quality measure progress in Mary Manning Walsh Home to their interdisciplinary team approach to QI and the input provided by administration, department heads, unit staff nurses, and certified nursing assistants to study and improve its QI initiatives. The team openly and recurrently discusses barriers, and challenges encountered and shares their successful methods for achieving change. The facility had the opportunity of sharing its best practices and assessment tools with other long-term facilities in the Catholic Health Care System and the tools have been adapted and used by all of the network€s nursing homes. Mary Manning Walsh Homes' partnership with the IPRO NHQI team has spanned all levels of staff as well as the organizations Board of Directors. The joint venture continues to enhance the QI progression throughout the facility.

The ongoing team approach to QI has resulted in IPRO naming Mary Manning Walsh Home as a recipient of the IPRO 2007 "Quality Award." The Quality Award recognizes their dedication to QI, their ongoing collaboration with IPRO, their excellent results achieved through an organization-wide commitment to continuous QI, and their willingness to share barriers, challenges, quality practices and materials with IPRO and other nursing homes in New York State.
